My son's wetting is very erratic. Sometimes he wets nightly, sometimes only twice a week and other times he can go for months without wetting at all. Why does this happen?
Many bedwetters suffer from this same condition. The sleep pattern becomes elevated and the deep sleep disorder changes into a dormant state and hides below the surface, which allows the bedwetter to cycle normally.
Usually, an event takes place that triggers the sleep disorder back above the surface and the sleep pattern no longer cycles properly. This event forces stage 4 (deep sleep and wetting) to once again occur for long periods during the night.
Events, both positive or negative, such as a divorce, death in the family, new baby in the house, move to a new home, a new friend, or even a promotion at work can jar the sleep disorder to the surface or back into the dormant state.
Unfortunately, we've never found a good explanation for this strange occurrence, but the sleep disorder and the wetting can continue to go back and forth throughout life, unless it's treated and cured while the enuretic is still wetting. In the event the wetting ends by itself, sometime in the future, the enuretic will still suffer from the sleep disorder and will never be able to eliminate it.
